"The global extent of the grassland biome and implications for the terrestrial carbon sink" just published in Nature Ecology & Evolution

The recent research published in Nature Ecology & Evolution (DOI: 10.1038/s41559-025-02955-6) corrects the estimate regarding the global extent of grasslands, now equalling 30.1 million km² (22.8% of the Earth's land surface) compared to previous estimates exceeding 50 million km².

The study, conducted by an international network of over 100 researchers, improves estimates of grassland carbon stock, enabling a better implementation of more efficient conservation and climate-mitigation policies.
